poo...every 5 days and consistency
« on: November 23, 2007, 15:50:20 pm »
Every 5 days is usually with an enema after 2 days of fussing. It is hard formed stool just like an adults, harder than mine TMI   :-X

He eats 1/4 to 1/2 c of solids per day, if even that much. Is this normal? :-\

How old is he?

If he's in obvious pain/discomfort, then I'd make sure to give him plenty of water and as much pureed fruit/veg as possible.  A lot of the cereals can cause constipation so I'd recommend cutting back on those for a few days.  Home made baby food is often better for constipation too.

With his milk feeds, is he on formula?  If so, I'd recommend (slightly controversial here and make sure you go with your mummy instincts over advice from me!!! ;)), watering it down sligtly.  This'll only be suitable if he's gaining adquately and you don't have a problem getting milk down him.  Sophie's been on nine ounce bottles since 6 months so I give her nine ounces of water with eight scoops when she's a little bunged up...

I find this helps.

Good luck - poor little guy!

He is on breastmilk. 7 months. He eats pancakes, green beans, sweet potatoes, peaches, carrots, zucchini (courgette) that sort of thing. Half finger foods half purees. All whole grain gluten-free stuff. No bananas b/c I don't want to make things worse! I am trying more fruits but I have to go to the natural market and get exotic stuff b/c he is intolerant of pears and apples. I tried prunes, I am watching him closely. His older sister was allergic to all of the above and apricots. I am also considering trying some molasses. Thank you so much for replying! :-*

Have you ever done glycerin suppositories?  My ped has recommended those when dd has been constipated before.  Could you mix the apple or pear purees with some of the purees? Like carrots and pears since carrots are sweet and have a strong flavor, maybe he won't notice it?  DD also will take watered down apple juice - half juice half water, and within a day or so after a 4oz bottle she'll have a better poo.  Just some thoughts.

Is he definitely constipated?  I know that some babies just don't go as frequently as others...  I always recommend trusting your instincts though and if your mummy mind is telling you he's constipated, he probably is - especially if he's having obvious trouble passing stools...

DD also will take watered down apple juice - half juice half water, and within a day or so after a 4oz bottle she'll have a better poo.  Just some thoughts.

Will she go back to water after juice?  I know a lot of parents really don't mind giving juice to their lo's but my DS had a real struggle going back to water after we'd let him have juice and I really didn't want him having juice for every drink.  DD only has water now.  Juice obviously has loads of nutrients in but it's really not good for their teeth and it's quite high in calories (I was an obese child and as such am very conscious of what I give my kids).  Boiled water should essentially be just as good for constipation...  They tell you as an adult to drink lots of water if you are bunged up and the priniciple is the same for babies.  Just offer it as much and as often as possible.

I would *personally* try mixing something like fig syrup (check with pharmacist that this is ok for a 7 month old) or prune juice with his food.  Dried apricots are also good for constipation - you can soak them in warm boiled water to make them less of a choking hazard and a great finger food for a little one...

Rasins and sultanas are also great but they aren't recommended for babies so young (due to choking risk), I'd recommend blending them with some boild water or prune juice - maybe mixing them with some other purees if he doesn't like the texture...

Just a few more suggestions - keep us posted!

actually dd prefers plain water to the juice water mix :) So that is good for us.  If I do the water and juice mix I do it in a bottle instead of a sippy because I don't want her to get used to having it in the sippy and not want to go back to plain water.  We don't do a whole lot of juice either for the same reasons you don't - Jocasta - overweight parents, lots of calories, etc. but there have been 2 or 3 times where that has helped a little.

As well as all the above, do check out the Laxative thread for other suggestions...

Thanks so much everybody. I gave him prunes yesterday (about 1 oz) He used to throw up with apples and pears and now they give him watery movements and diaper rash, so they are a no go. After the prunes he was up all night. (average once an hour) So I don't think they were a good idea. He was fussy all morning and would not take his nap (and I was used to a good hour and a half nap in the mornings) Finally had a diaper explosion around noon and I had to give him a bath, now he is finally sleeping. So I am thinking prunes were not a good idea? I found out recently he is allergic to eggplant and it gave him a diaper explosion too.

I bought flax oil, as another forum suggested it, but I still need to find out how much to give him. When I find out, I will add it to the laxative thread if it works. Seems to make since, as I am on fishoil (I had to replace my Rx with it b/c of breastfeeding) for colitis.

The ripe banana usually works the same as the prunes, but I am trying to get him regular, not having 2-3 days of fussing and then a diaper explosion. (the experience with the prunes happens with every laxative food that I have tried, that he seems to tolerate)

I will keep you posted. I love babywhisperers! :-*

Hi!  My DD is very constipated -due to formula...  She poos every other day and that's with "help" such as a 1/2 of a glycerin suppository.  Her poo is HARD and dry and she pushes, grunts and screams when just a little comes out.  The suppositories seem to work well and were recommended by our pedi.  We also give her straight prune juice (no more than 4 ounces per day) and give her prunes (puree) once a day.  We also stay away from any of the constipating foods such as bananas.  IMHO I would say try to give the prunes once a day and see if that helps with regularity.  They may have been working, but because he was "backed-up" it may have turned into an explosion where otherwise it would have been a semi-normal poo...  Our pedi said to give her stuff with at least 1 gram of fiber if not 2 for food; never give anything with 0 fiber until he's regular and then even just a little.  Sorry to hear about the allergies too, that may make things kind of tough...  {Hugs} to you -hopefully things will get better!
