5 month yr old sleeping hell
« on: January 02, 2008, 22:46:22 pm »
dear all
i have just discovered this website while my wife finally gets a little rest
we are totally at a loss and dont know what to do
my wife has the baby whisperer books which is how i found this website
our baby boy is five months and sleeps very poorly
he did briefly around 3 months have about 2 weeks where he slept through but hasnt since
and the last month in particular has been hell -we typically get 3-4hrs sleep per night
he is totally dummy dependent to sleep
typically we put him to bed at 7 and he sleeps for 45-60mins
then he will cry for the dummy
sometimes we give this once other times it may take 5-10 times
sometimes he just perpetually spits it out
getting back to sleep takes 10mins to 3 hr
this cycle is repeated through the night say at 11pm and then about 2pm
the 2pm is the worst as it can take 2 hrs or more to go back to sleep with constant crying
he has been teething but this routine is pretty much established now so iam sure it cant be due to teething every night
we have tried night feeding but that makes things worse in terms of making him unsettled (he has been on solid food for 4 weeks)
we have been doing the shush pat for 8 days but does not seem to be working in that it doesnt settle him

to answer the FAQ

What’s his/her daily routine? E.A.S.Y - up at 7am feed, nap at 8.15 for 1 hr, feed at 11am nap about 12
for 45min to 2 hrs, lunch at 1.30pm, milk at 3pm, nap 4.30-5.00 for 30 mins, food at 5.30, bath 6.30, bed at 7

Do you bottle or breastfed?? bottle, somewhere better 4-6 fl oz, he is quite chubby at 60% percentile

How many wakes per night? 3-4 but for long periods, sometime 10-15 times per night
What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up? long time disressed very loud crying
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry? crying - wailing
What have you tried to settle?? shush pat
What do you do for A time and how long is it? for as long as it takes
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? yes but this is for 5 weeks+ now
Have you introduced cereal? Why, how much, and how many times a day? (for LO’s under 6 months) 3 meals but cereals only once at breakfast
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? a dummy

i think we are doing something wrong but we dont know what
the health visitor and doctor both said all is normal
we have read books and www pages but still at a loss
we had tried longer day naps and shorter day naps but to no avail

i think he cant settle himself back to sleep without us
but even then it takes a long time
the only thing we havent tried is controlled crying which we are relutanct to do for obvious reasons but we know we cant go on like this

apologies if this is rambled, my first post and iam so tired
any help at all would be great
thank you

just to update
in some ways last night was better as he slept from 10 til 3.30am
however he woke at 3.30am and cried until 5.30am
during this time we left him for 2 mins then went in and did shush pat and replaced the dummy
i guess we must have gone in about 30-40 times during this period
in the first part i think he was just awake then afterwards it seemed he couldnt settle
if anyone could offer some advice it would be much appreciated

welcome!
Sound svery tough, you've come to the right place for help.
If you think te dummy is the culprit, get rid of it, you can see how in the PROPS board.
How is your LO going to sleep?

Does sound like you are having a tough time and welcome to the board  :)

I do agree with yaya that the dummy has become a prop and he now needs some one to put it back for him when he wakes up.  It may be time to wean him from it.

I think that you can start pushing his A time.  In the morning I see he has only an hour or 1.5h A. I will aim for 2-2.5h initially and then start extending the nap.  he still needs 2 naps of 1.5-2h and a catnap and 10-12h at night. This is a 4h EASY that can be used as a guideline:

7am wake
9am  sleep (1.5-2h)
1pm sleep (1.5-2h)
Between 5-6 catnap of 40ish min to get through supper and bath time
7.30pm bed
11.00pm dreamfeed (until 7-8 months or when solid food is firmly established

At his age if providing that he is getting enough calories during the day shouldn't need a feed during the night.  I wouldn't feed him during the night and use pu/pd instead. I think it may be more effective than the shh/pat.  What you aiming for is to teach your ds to self-sooth.  I think what is happening as soon as he transitions to his next sleep cycle (a cycle is 40min-therefore the waking after 40min) he cannot get back to sleep.

Sleep training is hard and when you ready I think you need to consider it-remember you are aiming to teach him to self-sooth.  It will be hard and can take some time to work but you need to persevere.  We will be here if things get tough  :-*

Good luck and ask if you have anymore q.

Elmarie  :)

I also have a 5 month old, so I am no expert. However, we quit the dummy cold turkey at 3 months. it was quite a rough couple of nights, but so worth it.
I also introduced a luvey at 4 months. Now during the night or naps (I can see on our video monitor) when we wakes, one thumb goes in mouth and the other hand grabs lovey and rubs it on his head.  The pat/shh did not work for us past 4 months. Shh and head rub is what we did.  He is a self soother (most of the time)! We never had to try pu/pd but is seems to work for many.
The other thing I still do is keep track of how many ounces he eats during the day. I know that to sleep well at night he needs between 28-32 oz and I try and make sure he gets that even when doesn't seem to realize it.  (I never force him, just offer more frequent bottles if is ounces are low).  This also takes away any question or confusion when I am exhausted during the night and debate feeding him.

I hope some of this may be helpful. This board has helped me many times, so keep posting. Good luck!

A similar thing happened to my 4 month old when we introduced solids - he ended up waking more during the night than when he was just on milk.  I think it may still have been a bit hard on his digestive system.  We ended up taking him off any solids and the night wakings diminished dramatically.  We're now doing 4 bottles a day anywhere from 6-8 oz and he sleeps from 7:30 to 7:30 with the odd wakeup for diaper change or teeth or whatever.  I'm still holding off on solids because I hate to mess with a good thing!  Perhaps you could give it a try and see if it improves things.

dear all
a miracle
45 mins after being put down last night he woke
we then had 50 mins of crying while my wife did PU PD all without the dummy
i thought he would never stop but he did
he went to sleep on his side
we then listened and every 45 mins he was noisy but transitioned
he slept til 2.30am which is a first where he woke crying
my wife then settled him in only 5 mins
he then slep til 7am
incredible
all without the dummy
virtually a full night
he is in much better form today as well
we kept him up til 9am following the advice on here
then he went down til 10.30am
again he cried but wife settled him in 3 mins
all without the dummy
either this is a fluke or a miracle but we cant believe it
6 weeks of hell and sudden there is a light on the horizon
perhaps he was just ready to lose the dummy ? and maybe us popping it back in was upsetting him
thanks to all here !

Just seen this, how amazing!!

Just repeat what you did last night tonight and whatever you do dont look back!!! Also expect some regression around maybe night 5 but just persevere through it its very normal!!

Sounds like he was ready to lose the dummy an also that he needed to learn to self soothe which it sounds like he has from your wife doing the pu/pd the first time, so the next time he woke he knew how to settle himself!!

Ive used pu/pd with an 11 month old and had very similar results the first night! It was amazing! Soooooooo worth it!!

Good luck!! :)

That's great.. as Clare said it may get hard at times but just carry on.  Do the pu/pd during the night as well and you will see you will soon have a LO that can transition from one sleep cycle to another without the dummy or mom's help.

I must say that pu/pd has also been our miracle life saver... :)
