milk allergy?
« on: July 31, 2008, 14:15:48 pm »
liam is 11 months old so we knew it was safe to give him small sips of homo milk to start transitioning him to milk instead of formula.

the first time he tried it, he was fine.

the second time, he got a rash all over his face.

<sigh> we are SO used to this because he already has wheat/glutton/egg sensitivities & we have to feed him on a celiac disease diet.

is there such a think as milk allergy? what can he have instead of milk if soy also makes him sick? he does fine with milk based formula & has had some cheeses & seemed okay with those...

Yikes...  OH yes, there is a such thing of a milk allergy.  Some have an intolerance and some have any actual allergy.

I am sure it is SOO hard avoiding gluten, eggs, and everything else

To me, the rash is a deft. sign of an allergy, BUT if he has been drinking cow's milk based formula without a problem, then you would think he would be very fussy and have a reaction from that.

If you can't do whole milk or soy, there is rice milk, BUT it is very low in protein and fat.  Bascially he will be drinking it for the calcium and added vitamins.  You have to be sure to get fortified rice milk.

Here is a link about rice milk and increasing fats.

But before you did that, I would talk to your doctor or try the milk again.  That is just strange that he can handle cheese, formula, but get a rash from milk.  Maybe try 2% milk?

i know, it does seem strange doesn't it? i was so hopeful when we made the easy transition from BF'ing to milk based formula thinking "okay, at least he can have that even if he can't have the rest (wheat/egg/glutton)" but now... i can't think what else the rash would've been from, we gave him the milk with his morning cheerios & he's had cheerios a million times & been fine (which makes me think the wheat/egg/glutton is more of a sensitivity and less an allergy b/c cheerios have wheat ingredients although no actual wheat)

wow. run on sentence.

i did read yesterday - right after posting this - about rice milk and adding coconut milk to fatten it up which i thought was a great idea. i am bummed we won't be able to feed him peanut butter because of the glutton but he should be able to try almond butter.. my sister can eat that.

anyway i'll be talking to his dr about it very soon...

do you know, is there any reason we start giving them cow's milk instead of keeping them on formula from year 1-2? i know they make toddler formula... can we just keep using that instead??

Hello:

So does he have actual celiac disease or just all the symptoms?  I remember talking to you about that before.

I have done a lot of reading about celiac, because I have all the symptoms myself (but tested negative).  Anyhow, they say that some celiac's can handle oats just fine, but others still cannot because it is in the same family as wheat.

Tyler (my 10 mos) old gets a huge rash on his face from oats, but tested negative.  I bought a cereal called Perky O's.  It is made from sorghum flour.  They look just like cherrios.

With the formula.  I think you should just keep him on it.  I wish I had with my first son, because we had a very bad transition to milk.

With Tyler (well he is almost 11 months now).  I am keeping him on Nutramigen for AS LONG AS I CAN.  Notice, I typed that big, because I know he is getting his vitamins, calcium, everything he needs.

Personally there really is not that much difference in the next step formula.  The only real difference I saw was, it has more calcium and a few more of the vitamins/minerals are higher or lower.

If it were me, I would just keep on what you are giving him.

Hugs, Wendy

If he will drink it, then I would keep it.  I think the stress really sets in when you have no options.  Thomas (MSPI) stopped drinking formula about 9 months and would dabble here and there with other things, but I have never felt like I did when he was steadily drinking the Nutramigen.  It really didn't matter if he had a bad eating day, because it provided all he needed.  Right now, he thrives somehow in his own way.  He drinks nothing but juice and water (I do buy the minute maid juice which has added calcium).  Occas he will have few sips of rice or almond milk and he will eat a few bites of baked goods with hemp milk, but he really doesn't drink it like he should.  We tried Neocate, Neocate splash, Elecare, Nutramigen again and regular Enfamil (bad idea).  He refused all of the above.  Had we tried earlier and detected the MSPI earlier, I feel he would have been more accepting.  Hang in there - I try not to rock the boat when it is smooth sailing!!!
