My 1 year old still wakes up 1-3x at night crying
« on: August 19, 2008, 21:03:06 PM »
My DS just turned one and still wakes up 1 to 3 times a night. He wakes up crying and once we get up and give him pacifier he goes right back to sleep... We did use PU/PD when he turned 4 month and gave him back his paci when he was 6 month so he can use it as a comfort item. But I am afraid that maybe it became more then a comfort item for him...

He falls a sleep with it. Then loses it once he is asleep. He can turn and move while asleep fine. But if he wakes up crying then he needs it.

I am not sure if he wakes up and cry because he can't find it, or he already wake up crying and need it to calm him down. Either way, I don't know what to do... Why does he wake up crying? Can i do something about it? Do you think he is pacifier dependent now? Should I take it away?

His schedule is following:
7:30 am - wake up
7:40 am - 150ml formula
8:00 am - dropping of daycare (he just started going a week ago)
9:00 am - cereal/yogurt
12:00pm - lunch (pure/soup/other)
12:30pm - nap for about 2 hours
3:30pm - 150ml formula
4:30pm - pure and snack
5:30pm - I pick him up and we go to the park
7:00pm - bath
7:15pm - 120ml formula and 250ml cereal
7:30-7:50pm - asleep

He usually wakes up around 9:30-10pm and then 3 or 4am and can also at 6am.

Please help... I don't know why he cries when he wakes up... we did teach him how to sooth himself to sleep and there are nights when he doesn't wake up... but is there anything I can do to make it more regular and consistent and permanent???

Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Irina

Thank you for moving this post to the right forum. I didn't know where it belongs.

Mukta,  I don't think it's teething. I check all the time if it is... When he is teething he cries longer when he wakes up and doesn't just go back to sleep when we come to him and give him his pacifier. He's always been like this as long as I can remember... but someone told me that boys have nightmares so I thought it should go away soon. But he is one now, and is still waking up. I just don't know why and if there is anything I can do to stop it.

could it be the pacifier waking him up? For us, it was a mixture of AP, we ended up giving him milk in the middle pf the night, pacifier and pure habit.

Pleas can you explain in detail exactly what happens in the NW

Thanks,
Mukta

Thank you for all of your responses.

Basicaly, he wakes ups crying or wakes up and start to cry (I can't catch exactly how it happens), but once my husbabnd or I give him pacifier and put him down, he goes back to sleep.

I am not sure if I should put him earlier to bed since he has only one nap now and probably really tired.

BTW, he is teething!!! I just felt his fifth teeth (second right top tooth)... and he was crying longer than usual last night when he woke up. But usually he goes right back to sleep once we get him his paci and put down (since he usually sits down or stand up once wake up).

I'll try to put more pacifiers into the bed tonight (but I am not sure he is even looking for them because when he tries to find it, he usually does and then goes back to sleep).

Thanks again for all your help.
