Sudden Reduction in A Time Capability
« on: June 02, 2010, 17:35:27 PM »
We were transitioning successfully to 1 nap until about 5 days ago. Now my son can't even do 4 hrs A time. He is 1 year old and for about a month had been doing 5hr A times with just 1 long nap. I know 5 hrs is long for 12 months but less than 4 hrs (he starts getting very cranky around 3.5 hrs) is short! This change is well aligned with his development of walking. He was walking before that but not all day, all over the place. So is he just tired because he is so much more active? What are some other potential reasons? I think I have read on other posts that teething can also cause sleep changes and I have looked (as well as he will let me) and I don't see any new teeth coming it. It has been 1-2 months since the last tooth so I wouldn't be surprised if 1 is coming in. He isn't sick. He is sleeping well at night (11 hrs).

Old routine:
6:30 wake
11:30 - 2:30 nap
7:30 sleep

New routine (we are still trying to figure this out)
6 wake
I have tried a 30 min am nap from 9:30 - 10. Then he needs to sleep again from about noon - 2:30 or 3
I have also tried a longer am nap from 9:45 - 11 but then he isn't quite ready for a nap at 2:30 and sleeps more like 3-4.
7 - 7:30 sleep

I am constantly waking him from his naps which I don't like doing but I'm afraid he will think it is his 1, long, 3 hour nap if I don't. Maybe that is OK and then he can just take a short pm nap. Thoughts??

If he's just started walking, sure!  That can tire him out :)

After a while, his body will adjust and he'll be closer to his former routine.

I think either of the new routines are okay.  I constantly wake DS up from his 2 naps or else the day just gets horrible, and then we have EWs *cringe*  Have you noticed him preferring either of those new routines over the other?
