Is he pushing with his hands?  I find I have to give James something to fiddle with while he nurses or hold his top hand or he pushes away while he's nursing which hurts.  Warm compresses, lanolin, etc on the tear as well.  I've got something similar at the moment too, if I figure it out I'll let you know (aggravated by the fact that he didn't nurse for almost a full 24 hours when he was sick and I didn't have my pump)!

yup- pushing with his hands!! It does make it a little better when i hold his hand.. And of course the lanolin creams were all ditched months ago!! I might have to buy some more!

I think it's also not a coincidence that he has started night feeding too- this 24 hour feeding is not what i'm used to! I might try an alternative hold... although my visions of a 'football' hold will probably be ridiculous in reality with a squimy 10 month old!!

Urgh, DD pushed with her hands for AGES!  Is he doing it when there's a slower flow?  If so, you could try some breast compressions.

When I get nipple pain these days it is always linked to ds drooling much more - I figure that it is teething, although he starts drooling about a month before there is anything to see! However, the reason it hurts me is that his drool is much more acidic when he is drooling a lot more - I can see that it is irritating his face as well, as he gets a rash round his mouth. Is hamish drooling more than usual? If it is irritation, then that might well cause a small tear - I second the lanolin.

And all of mine have done the pushing away thing - it hurts a lot! The girls added twisting their heads into the mix as well, just to make sure that I really felt it!

Yup, DD did that too....probably from around a couple of weeks old through to around 11/12 months....not so much now, though

He was drooling HEAPS with the tonsillitis- as in NOT SWALLOWING- and it may have all started then and now the damage is done, plus the pushing, plus any looking about ::) Last night at our second night feed ( ::) 3 days left of that rubbish i tell you now!) i tried the 'football hold'- MUCH better- as his top palate isn't against the sore part... so i can so that for a while till it gets better (not in public.. too embarrassing...)

The football hold was the magic solution! It turned out not to be that tricky to do and i have NO PAIN at all with it!! So after a few more days i reckon i can go back to normal nursing no problem! Thanks ladies!

So glad you found a position that is more comfortable! I have never done anything but the cradle hold with all three of mine-Did your ds notice the difference? I can just see Samuel being like, "Wha?? Where am I??" If I did that. Lol! ;D

No- my guy is pretty much a milk feind... so just as long as his mouth could still reach the nipple he was fine!! It seemed pretty blooming ridiculous though! Baby in your arm pit and all!
