pu/pd not working with 9 mo - trying to wean rocking
« on: June 11, 2012, 16:56:05 PM »
I have been transitioning from rocking my little one to sleep independence gradually. I have been rocking him until he is just about to go to sleep then I put him down in his crib, put my hand on him so he knows I am there meanwhile humming a lullaby. Well today started the process of putting him in his crib more awake where his eyes are open but relaxed (no rocking at all)My hand was on him like before as I tried humming him to sleep. He quickly figured out this was change and started crying. I continued to hum and tell him It's ok and that it's sleepy time. He started to get louder and louder working himself up. So I picked him up with no rocking and continued humming until he calmed then put him back in his crib. As soon as I put him down he started whaling. I tried to console him with my hand on him and humming the same song I have been since he was born. He wasn't calming down after about 4-5 minutes I picked him up and continued to hum until he calmed. This went on for about three more times until about 30 minutes into it he settled and when I put him down the last time his eyes were already closed but he moved around a little when I put him down so I put my hand on him and continued to hum for about 30 seconds then left the room. Does this mean PU/PD didn't work? What can I do better? I really what him to be able to sleep independently and not fight it so much.

Need help!! :'(

I am not successful in putting him down and him going to sleep on his own yet. When we put him to sleep partially awake, he wakes up and then fusses and sits up in bed and will cry until we come to help him go back to sleep.  He does have some nights of sleeping through the night.  Generally speaking, he wakes too early most of the other times.  We would like to get him to sleep until 6 am but some days he wakes at 330 in the morning sometime talking like he is having a conversation with the video monitor and wants to stay awake until he starts crying and throwing a fit.  During this process we try everything to get him to go back to sleep. that he is so tired by 5 or 530 in the morning.  By then, it is almost time to wake and so we try to let him sleep at least an hour before we leave so that he has some kind of rest before going to daycare.  Sometimes this makes us late for work and I would really like to work on these two things: getting him to go to sleep on his own and getting him to not wake up so early.  Any advice? JACM is 12 mo now and I would like to get him to go to sleep on his own by 15 months and wake up closer to or after 6 am.

I am currently travelling down this road as well with my 12 mo.  Still having our ups and downs but making progress. Putting her down calm then using a sleepy phrase, and at bedtime I will walk away from crib if she wants to play/stand up.  If she's freaking out I go back, lay her down, say phase, pat a little if necessary, etc.  Ssh-pat is what saves us here.  We're still working on removing that, especially in the middle of the night, but we have more or less removed the rocking.  it is possible!  Consistency is key :)

With PUPD at this age I really wouldn't pick him up at all. And if you do, don't hold him til he is calm, just hold him for a second then lie him back down. Can you write out your EASY for us?
