Stomach bug and BF
« on: March 14, 2013, 20:52:26 pm »
Hi Mamas. Hope you all can help me out as my enitire household has been hit with some sort of stomach bug. I am scared to death that I will not be able to BF my little Ivy! I am able to sip liquids and have only thrown up once but if DH is an indicator I am not out of the woods quite yet! ANy suggestions are very appreciated!

Keep drinking as much as you can and keep feeding her - she may want to feed more often if your supply dwindles a bit with mild dehydration.

I;ve had a tummy bug each time I've breastfed and the nursling didn't catch it though everyone else did - so its worth it!

Oh no, poor you.  The thing that might hold you back would be physically being sick while you were meant to be BF.  If you can manage to keep taking those sips of water, there's no reason why little Ivy shouldn't get her milk.

I was quite sick when I had mastitis and remember feeding DD and throwing up into a bucket at the same time.  These things can be achieved! ::)

Hope you're better soon x

Yes!  I had a horrendous stomach virus when ds was 3 weeks old and he was ok.  He did need to nurse more often, but it worked out ok in the end (and we went on to feed for another 16 months, so no long term impact!)

THank you all so much. This morning Ivy threw up before I started ( but after DH and my Mama!) But that was it, some diarrhea, but she has been eating pretty well all day, avacado, peach, pear etc.. We will definitely do extra nursings as need be. Hoping this passes quickly... thank you.

Keep nursing, it's the best thing for her during a tummy bug.  Hope you're all better soon!

Think we are all back to normal here! Actual vomiting bits of stomach bug didn't last too long. I felt wobbly and was really choosy about food and drink for a while but think we are back to ourselves now. I couldn't drink very much water but kept fluids coming in as much as possible ( diluted pineapple juice, gatorade) and I don't think my supply was affected too much. I am drinking a lot of water now and hope all is well! Thank Mamas!
