4 1/2 month routine. 30 minute naps
« on: September 29, 2014, 09:05:10 am »
My twins are 4 1/2 months now are are just about going through the night. I put them down for 6.30 df at 10.30 then usually they go though till 6 am but have recently started waking at 4ish to chat. Sometimes for over an hour! They aren't cold or hungry. We aren't on a set routine (desperately trying)! They are in their own room.

Very loose routine

6am wake (don't go in till 6.30)
7am 6 oz - don't always want this bottle!
7.30/45 nap 30 mins
10am nap 30 mins
11am 6 oz
12pm nap 30 mins
1.30 nap 30 mins
2.30 6oz
3.30 nap 30 mins
6pm 6oz
6.30 bed
Df 10.30 6 oz

Looking at it it looks like I'm doing EASYSY

Arrrgghh!! Any advice please?

Thanks

Hugs. Must be hard with two :-*
I think your first A time is to of short honey, this is why they are short napping and possibly waking to chat at 4am.

It's a rubbish age for sleep anyway but what about trying to push the first A time out closer to two hours. You can do it gently by adding 15 mins every few days. If you get a better nap you can then push the next A time. I'd probably keep the A times no shorter than 1hr15 even on a short nap too or they will just try to get A time elsewhere yk?

Do you have white noise to help then sleep through the others wakings etc?

Hi Kate, I'm thinking longer A time too...
Are they waking each other, or are they both independently waking at those times?

I've just started to push out there a time in the morning so hopefully this helps. They don't tend to wake each other up. Which is lucky!

Hi, I read this with great interest as this is the daytime routine that my 5 month old DD is following at the moment. Firstly the 4am waking is perfectly normal, they will probably chat and play for a while and then go back to sleep. Are they in their own room? if so turn your monitor down so they only wake you when they want you. If not then you will need to live with it until they are.

With regards to extending your daytime naps you need to extend those first, then they will be able to cope with extended A. If you do it the other way round you may miss their sleep window resulting in them walking themselves before they get through a full sleep cycle which will mean they are even more tired resulting in worse napping and sleeping at night. You need to avoid an over tired baby at all costs. In order to do this you need to wake them just before they are due to wake up and then get them back to sleep so they enter a second sleep cycle. With my son I used shush pat, so five minutes before he was due to wake I did shush pat for ten minutes and he went over into a second sleep cycle. I did this for about a week before I no longer needed to do it. I am going to do 'something' with DD next week when my son is back at school.

I hope this makes sense, good luck.

Thank you for your reply. It's not possible for me to wake before cycle and then spend 10 minutes shying. I have 5 month old twins and a 2 year old. I've managed to stretch out there a times and this has helped slightly.

Thanks
