Swaddling issue!
« on: December 20, 2014, 18:06:06 pm »
Hiya

When our DS was 8 weeks he started to fight out of his swaddling so we ubswaddled one arm and he was happy with that and started to self soothe. In the last four weeks we have tried ubswaddling his other arm but he just gets upset so we re-swaddle the one arm.

Problem now is he is waking and fighting to get out but can't cope with it when we do!

Do we battle on through and just accept a few rubbish nights or should we wait another couple of weeks?? He is 12 weeks on Tuesday.

Any advice gratefully received!!

Thanks

Xx

I don't think there is one answer to your question, because it's very individual and parents would choose different ways.
I personally would wean the swaddle now that it became a problem even if it meant that we have a few rough nights, but it's because I am an impatient person ;)
When we started having a problem with the paci because DS would drop it and we had to go back to plug it in I just weaned even though I knew I can "suck it up" for a while and it will change.

Hi
Thanks for the reply, I think ds had made decision for us as when he woke for his night feed he'd fought his arm out to suck his fist so going to go cold Turkey tonight!

Fingers crossed!

Sometimes we don't give them enough credit do we....  We went cold turkey and it was the best nights sleep we've had! Since then he's dropped a night feed and going 7 till about 4 feed and back to sleep till half six/seven!

Now just the dreaded 45 min naps to deal with ;-)

Question for you…

I'm having the same problem with my 10 week old, he hates the swaddle and fights and strains against it, I feel so bad using it because he really seems to hate it!! We use a miracle blanket, but recently, he has been starting to get out of that too, often wakes up across the crib, with both feet and sometimes one arm out, so I'm worried about safety.

Any insight on how you put him down without it on? I've tried a couple times, and his little arms and legs flop around so much when I lay him down, that he gets upset. Maybe I just put him down anyways, and then shh-pat him without it on?

And without a swaddle, do you use a blanket to keep him warm? Or just more layers of clothes?

Thanks!

I used to put a blanket on him and make sure the room is warm enough but not too hot.

If you are concerned to his safety then I wouldn't use it anymore, but try and hold his arms when he falls asleep, even gently, and see if he is ok with that. I would probably do Shush-pat or just shush along with it.
