Tips to get 21 mo to take medicine?
« on: December 21, 2014, 07:17:41 am »
Hello!

Dd has an ear infection, and she has been given antibiotics banana flavour. She hates it, refuses to take it, and when i do coax her and manage, she gags & gets upset & says its awful!

Can i mix it in with milk/juice? I know the problem with that is she might not finish the drink, but im struggling. My other question is would the doc prescribe a different flavour if i explain she hates it & wont take it?

She's so ill bless her just want her better asap!

Think this may be a bit late for you as the course of antibiotics might be finished by now, but giving you a bump anyway as it's always useful to have tips for the future.
Hope she's feeling better x

We had to offer chocolate buttons to get E to take her banana antibiotics. It's not my usual bribe for things but in this case she needed the medicine and it did work, after a lot of coaxing.

i had the same issues with my DD...basically i had to sorta force it in little squirts at a time. i also gave little mini m&ms after as well.  it was stressful!

not sure where you are located but yes you should be able to get a different flavor (however, it could be the flavor was not added though).

my DD is now taking abx (she will be 3 in feb). she REFUSED at first but now will take it if she is allowed to give it to herself (we use a syringe).

Thank you ladies.

She has now finished the course, i ended up ringing the doctors and they prescribed another anti b but a lot thicker and more banana lol. So less anti b taste. She still hates it so unfortunatley i did have to lay her in my arms and squirt it in her cheek (awful awful awful) but by the last day or 2 she had decided she liked it and took it fine! Thank goodness. I tried bribes too she just wouldnt go near it xx

It sounds like you did the right thing. I have to admit that when DD was so poorly I had to find ways to "force" the meds in, nothing really awful, but holding her still and squirting the meds in like you have described. Horrible, and so against all my instincts, but it helped her get well.

Hope she continues to improve xx
