crawling down stairs...
« on: May 31, 2006, 09:10:06 am »

I keep reading that it is important to teach your baby to crawl downstairs once they can crawl so that they know what to do & it can help stop them falling....

I tried with my wee boy but he doesn't seem long enough to do one leg at a time - he got the arm movements but slid both legs at the same time - with the danger of just starting to slide down on his tummy!  (although I guess this is still safer than hurtling head first!)

does any one have any tips for HOW to teach this?

Can he go up the stairs yet?  It's really just the reverse motion.  My DD figured it out at daycare actually as they had a few carpet blocks stacked up on each other that she used to climb up and get stuck on.  If you have something like that or can start at the bottom of your stairs, I would recommend that.  Otherwise, you might just have to wait until he gets a little bit taller for him to learn.  If you're worried, just make sure you have a gate at the top of the stairs that you keep closed.
