Newborn and use of props??
« on: August 28, 2006, 19:24:23 PM »
Our LO is 2 weeks old (today!!), and we have been guilty of using all the "no-no" props to try to get her to sleep (feeding, walked around, rocked, falling asleep on daddy's chest, etc....). I would love to just put her in her crib/bassinet and walk away, but for the most part she wails. I've been using a paci -- which works, although sometimes it seems to keep her awake (stimulate), and at other times, if it falls out (which it inevitably does), she wakes up and starts crying again. Any suggestions? I don't feel comfortable letting her cry to sleep at such a young age. Is this wrong? Thanks!!

Hello there, and congrats on your new baby!!!

First off, i totally want to say that it is really good that you DONT want to let her CIO to sleep, there is allways a gentler way to teach independant sleep. So moving into that, the way you can teach her to go sleep independantly is with the pat-shush method, here is the link: Shush-pat - How to  Just so you know all abbies are different and they take different times in learning how to sleep by  themselves, for example with my DS it could take me 45min to an hr of pat-shushing him just to get him to settle, he was at his worst from 4 weeks old till 9 weeks old, then at 9 weeks old his need for the pat-shush decreased, and at 12 weeks old he stopped needing it completely, so hang in there, cause its really hard but it does work in the end!

Hey,
can i jump in?
I have a son that is one month.  I am trying to start easy - day 2.
i am using a pacifier.  trying not to use it to fall asleep - but i do.
here's my question...
when ds is sleepy - I go into the nursery and close the blinds, swaddle him, and then sit down for quiet time.  This is when my son starts to fuss.  and the fussing turns to crying.  I try the sh/pat and he just seems to get more upset.
Is the quiet sitting really needed for every baby... and what is happening with my son that he gets upset at that point?

appreciate any help or feedback.
