Can mango cause constipation?
« on: May 17, 2007, 14:37:50 pm »
Last night Tanner suddenly started to cry and cry and we couldn't figure out why. Then, right after his 3am feeding he did a poo that was small and pebbly (TMI...sorry). So I figure that he was constipated and that's probably why he was crying. We just introduced mango 3 days ago. Could this cause it?

The only other new thing is that I was putting a tiny splash of apple juice in his water (to see if that helps get him interested in a sippy cup). And I know that apples constipate him. But he only drinks like 2-4 swallows a day so he is only getting a couple of drops a day.

Just wondering if anyone else's LO has experienced this with mango.

Thanks!
~Jaci

I have found that unripe fruit- no matter what it is- can be binding and ripe fruit is laxative. I have never had a mango prob but we go for ripe to very ripe fruit around here!
Are you BF or FF? Any other solids? Sometimes after being on rice for a few days it gets them constipated.

Hi celticmom!
Thanks for the reply. That is interesting that about the ripeness of fruit. I never thought of that. They were ripe but definately not very ripe. Hmmmmmm....I'm going to have to pay lots more attention to that now! I pureed a bunch and made mango cubes in the freezer - maybe I better use those for smoothies and get some new ones to try that are more ripe.  ;D

He's BF. I took him off rice cereal too when I took him off apples as apples constipated him. He's eating pears, prunes, sweet potatoes, bananas, peas, avocado, yogurt and oatmeal (and carrots as of Thursday). The bananas haven't been a problem before but now that I know about the ripeness - I'll make sure I'll only get him ripe ones.

Thanks again for the info!

When he is older the semi-ripe mango may not be a prob. My lo just finished a bout of constipation with pureed plums/ prunes- boy whas THAT smelly :o

I have wondered the same thing myself.  My lo used to eat TONS of (previously frozen) mango.  She was constipated ALL the time.

Truthfully, it is an on-going problem for her, but it is a lot less now that I don't let her live on it.

I know I haven't been very helpful but...

I was kind of hoping a few more people would reply to see if more people had the same complaint.

Celticmom - you just click on the phrase "showing appreciation" under the individual's name.  You will see the number increase.  (Welcome!)  ;D
