consolidated vs. broken sleep
« on: May 22, 2007, 18:09:58 pm »
Hi,

The most sleep Cole has done overnight in recent months is 10 hours, and that is always broken, whether it be 1, 2 or 3 wakings. eg 9pm to 7am with wakings at 11,2, 5:30.

the other night he "slept through" from 9pm-5:30am

Would consolidated sleep be that much more restful, that he wouldn't need as much?

I am hoping that after sleep training he will sleep MORE, given he will know how to go to sleep and return to sleep.  i am worried the opposite will occur.

thoughts?

Consolidated sleep is better of course but 8.5hrs is not enough and still has the same effect as fragmented sleep would (which is overtiredness) so I would keep doing what you are doing and in the end he should be sleeping 10.5-11hrs of consolidated sleep  :)

My DD isn't a sleeper either - a good night is only 2 wakeups.  But on the very rare ocaision that we only have 1 wakeup early in the night, I notice that she is a different personality.  Much happier and calmer.  I would think that a bit less sleep might be okay with consolidated versus broken sleep but not that much.

Good luck and let me know if you find something that works.
