South African mommies- help please
« on: August 08, 2007, 17:41:26 PM »
We will be traveling to South Africa in the new year with our two children, who will be over 2.5 and 15 months old at the time.  I am trying to find both childrens stories that I can read to them at bedtime and any childrens folk songs that are of South African origin.  We obviously can't tell them all about SA as they are too young to get some of it, but I thought this would be a good way to introduce some of the things that they will encounter on the trip.

Can anyone help with books or music cds, etc that we can try to find here?

Thanks a bunch moms!
Judy

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is an accapella singing group.  In Zulu.  Discovered them on a Sesame Street dvd, Mouse and I liked the way they sound.  The cd I got is rather soothing to listen to.  Found several at Amazon.    ;)

Hi,

I live in South Africa, just outside Cape Town, but I must admit, you really have my mind going about books and CDs. I can have a look around to see what's available, but nothing springs to mind immediately. Whereabouts are you going to be visiting?

We haven't yet decided on an itinerary for the trip, as I am still researching a lot of the stuff.  But I think we are decided on hiring a caravan for the 2 weeks and doing our own thing. We are flying into and out of Cape Town though. Do you have any tips? What fun things do you do with your little one?

Wow, you could spend 2 weeks just in and around Cape Town!!! But there is so much else to see. For a first sightseeing trip I would suggest travelling down the Garden Route which is a coastal road taking you to the Eastern Cape with lots of places to stop along the way. There's really a lot for children (probably more for your elder son though). There's a huge aquarium in Cape Town at the Waterfront - one of our biggest tourist attractions, so a good place to go - they also have boat rides etc. Closer to us, we have Monkey Town just outside Somerset West (go in the morning - it can get REALLY hot), there's also Butterfly World which the kids love - it has birds, reptiles, spiders and a touch farm with the usual small animals, there's also the World of Birds in Hout Bay (part of Cape Town). The cablecar going up Table Mountain (like I say - a lot right here). If you carry on down the garden route, there are great beaches, I think a Monkey World and another bird place. Lots of little farm stalls to stop at and stretch legs and eat. If you get as far as Port Elizabeth, there is an Oceanarium with a fantastic dolphin show. Oh and along the way the Outeniqua Choo Choo which is a steam train which does a day trip along beautiful scenery. And you must do the game farm thing - not too sure where you'd go in those areas, but there are LOTS - pretty expensive for us locals though.

I will chat to a friend of mine tomorrow who I think has a CD with songs about African animals. You can also look on Kalahari.net (a more local version of Amazon) - they might have something good.

Please feel free to PM me if you need more info. DH is a tour guide, so he will probably be able to help more when he gets back.

Hi, when we were last in SA we were given a set of CDs called Beautiful Creatures with songs about African animals.  We are from SA but live in the UK and these are brilliant to let Angus learn about SA. They are absolutely delightful...  there are tracks like "Ivumbu the happiest hippo" and "Horace the hyena" and "African lullaby"

I don't think you can get them here but they do ship internationally from SA.  Their website is http://www.beautifulcreatures.co.za.  you can also hear clips of the songs on the site.

Hope this helps!

Lyndsay x

PS I'm sure it doesn't help that I sometimes shed a few nostalgic tears when I hear some of the tracks... ::)

Also, as far as books go, we were sent a book called "Our Story Magic" which is a book of African Zulu Children's stories all with a theme of magic.  I haven't read them yet (Angus is still too young) but they look enchanting on flicking through.  Available on Amazon UK: (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Our-Story-Magic-Gcina-Mhlophe/dp/1869141113)

And there is a link on the amazon page to amazon US as I see you are based in Canada.

Yes, that's the CD my friend has too, so no more luck there. I found a lovely book in our library called "Doing the Animal Bop" by Jan Ormerod & Lindsey Gardiner - it's young enough for the kids and has mainly African animals with funny movements they do - good for a giggle. It's published by Oxford University Press and dated 2005 - so should still be in circulation. I also saw an interesting book in Kalahari.net - a collection of African folk stories compiled by Nelson Mandela. Unfortunately, without looking at the book, its hard to tell how age appropriate it is, but it is in the kid's section.

HTH - will keep looking - when I get to bookshops.

I found another site for you - http://www.sakidsonthego.com - it's quite informative - and from there, found another place to visit. It's near Butterfly World - called Animal Zone. We will be taking Sarah there on Saturday, so will report back.

Hi Judy,

Another suggestion - go onto http://www.africancreammusic.com - it has some great titles. I saw the Lullaby one in a shop here and was really impressed - it will give your kids a good feel for our African traditional music.

Thanks Cate, I'll look into it.  I'm starting to look into the planning of the trip now, you know where to stay what to see, and I'm starting to get really excited about it!  This will be quite the adventure with the two little ones.
